Met Éireann predict weather twist within days despite two-day warning

A warning for rain for five counties will remain in place until Monday but there is a change on the cards

Met Éireann is predicting the proverbial mixed bag over the next week as we approach Easter with sun, showers, thunderstorms and plenty of rain. There may be light at the end of the tunnel too but it's quite a long way off.

In its outlook for the week ahead, Met Éireann says: "Staying unsettled for the remainder of next week and into the Easter weekend with further showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times."

A Status Yellow rain warning has also been issued for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Galway, warning of "heavy rain at times today for all of Kerry and for western parts of Cork, Limerick, Clare and Galway."

Potential impacts include localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions. The warning is valid until 12 noon on Monday.

For today, Sunday, March 24, they say: "Some sunny spells this morning in the east and north. Rain and drizzle in the southwest will spread slowly northeastwards through the day. Northeast Leinster and Ulster will stay dry until after dark. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds becoming southerly and freshening.

"Outbreaks of rain and drizzle, some heavy, especially in the west and southwest [Sunday night], with the likelihood of some localised flooding. Patches of mist and fog also. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with mostly moderate, occasionally fresh and gusty southeasterly winds."

The forecast continues for the week: "Monday morning will be mostly cloudy with further rain, which will continue for much of the day in the east and north, but will give way to showers and a few bright spells further to the west and south. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with light to moderate variable winds.

"Mostly cloudy with further outbreaks of rain, some of it heavy, though easing overnight [Monday]. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees in a light to moderate easterly breeze."

They say Tuesday will be a "mostly cloudy day, with outbreaks of rain spreading from the southeast through the day. Highest temperatures generally ranging from 6 to 9 degrees in light to moderate northerly or variable winds.

"Mostly cloudy conditions and outbreaks of rain will continue overnight, some of it possibly heavy. Some clear spells may develop in the west, allowing temperatures to fall between of 0 and 4 degrees in light variable breezes.

"Wednesday will be mostly cloudy for a time, with outbreaks of showery rain, heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate variable winds.

"Wednesday night will bring further showers, some possibly heavy, likely to become isolated overnight with long dry spells developing. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees with some frost and ice forming.

"Sunshine and showers for the day, with some of the showers possibly turning heavy. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, with mostly moderate southerly breezes."

Beyond that there is some hope because Met Éireann extended forecast predicts a change in April. They said: "The first week in April looks like having slightly higher than average atmospheric pressure over Ireland with temperatures expected to be above average and rainfall amounts slightly below average."
