ALERT: Caution urged as Met Éireann issues status yellow fog warning for Ireland

Forecaster says areas of dense fog are likely leading to impaired visibility and potentially hazardous travelling conditions

Motorists and road users across the country are being urged to exercise caution overnight and early tomorrow morning due to 'potentially hazardous travelling conditions'.

Met Éireann, which has issued a second status yellow warning in less than 24 hours says the fog will linger in places, leading to impaired visibility.

"Areas of dense fog developing, leading to impaired visibility and potentially hazardous travelling conditions," states the warning which is valid from 8pm this Monday until 11am on Tuesday.

Gardai and Road Safety Authority are appealing to those who are driving in areas impacted by the fog to be careful when travelling.

Separately, MET Éireann is warning that very strong winds are likely across the country later this week with the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption in places.

The forecaster says a powerful low-pressure system is expected to hit Ireland on Thursday night and into Friday, bringing very strong winds with a potential for damage to be caused in places. High waves and heavy rain are also forecast for coastal areas.

Met Éireann, which is closely monitoring the situation, has issued an advisory for all of Ireland and says it will issue official weather warnings in the coming days once the forecast and path of the low-pressure system becomes clearer.

This advisory, which was issued this Monday afternoon, is valid until midnight on Saturday (Friday night).
