Text message fraud incident in Scarrif under garda investigation
The perpetrator sent a message pretending to be a family member with a new phone number in need of money
Gardaí in Scariff are currently investigating a fraud whereby a perpetrator sent a message pretending to be a family member.
As a result of these messages the injured party believed that the family member had a new number and needed financial support.
They provided their bank details to the perpetrator and money was subsequently taken from the account.
Sadly this approach is regularly used by fraudsters and messages appear credible. Gardaí have issued a statement on this incident to raise awareness of this prolific crime.
