Swimming restrictions in place at West Clare beach

SWIMMING is currently restricted at a popular Clare beach due to possible pollution.

A notice was posted for Kilkee last Friday advising bathers of the possibility of an increase in the levels of bacteria in the bathing water due to heavy rainfall.

The warning is in place until Wednesday, and a further advisory notice may be posted.

To reduce the risk of illness, beach users should take the following precautions: avoid swallowing or splashing water, wash your hands before handling food, avoid swimming with an open cut or wound and to avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

Higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness.
