Penneys reveals plans to open new store in Clare town

Primark has published a notice confirming it's intention to seek permission for three-storey-over-basement store in Ennis

The company behind the Penneys retail brand is set to lodge plans for a new outlet close to Ennis town centre in the coming days.

A statutory planning notice published this week states that Primark Ltd will submit plans for a three-storey-over-basement outlet on a 1.3-acre site at Harmony Row, Bank Place, and Bindon Lane in the town.

The proposed development is located across the River Fergus from Ennis 2040's planned mixed-use scheme at Abbey Street Car Park, which has been paused due to public backlash.

The new Primark proposal is expected to boost the economic fortunes of Ennis town centre by increasing footfall in the area.

The new store in Ennis is also part of Primark's commitment to investing over €250 million in Ireland over a ten-year period, which includes the development, relocation, and refurbishment of its stores across the country.

The proposed development comprises a gross floor area of 3,550 square metres, including ancillary areas such as staff facilities, a stockroom, plant rooms, and other support spaces.

The scheme also involves alterations and reconfigurations to the existing car park area serving the Bank of Ireland, a protected structure off Bindon Street and Bindon Lane.

The proposal includes the construction of a new public riverside pedestrian walkway from Bank Place to the existing pedestrian bridge over the River Fergus, connecting to the current pedestrian path from Harmony Row, along with modifications to the existing pedestrian bridge walkway.

Additionally, the plan includes demolishing a derelict house structure to make way for the new shopping outlet.

Primark currently operates a Penneys store at Ennis Shopping Centre, located opposite Zimmer Biomet Cusack Park on Ennis’s Francis Street.

That outlet has been operating in Ennis for a long time, and a Primark spokeswoman said on Monday: “We know how much our customers in Ennis would love a bigger Penneys store, and we too would love to make that happen. We hope to share more details when we can.”

Penneys opened its first store on Mary Street, Dublin, 56 years ago, and with the addition of a new store in Bray last year, it now has 38 stores across 21 counties in the Republic of Ireland.

Penneys trades as Primark internationally, with over 450 stores across Europe and the US.

Primark is also accelerating the pace of its international expansion, aiming to reach 530 stores by the end of 2026.
