Young woman dies after falling from Cliffs of Moher while sightseeing

A young woman has died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in a tragic accident this Saturday.

The woman, a college student in her early 20s, is believed to have been on a sightseeing trip with friends when she lost her footing and slipped.

According to reports Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter Rescue 115 was alerted to the incident this Saturday afternoon, May 4.

The helicopter was already in the air and on its way to the Aran Islands for the training exercise when the crew was requested to proceed to the incident, and arrived on the scene within minutes.

Doolin Coast Guard, the Aran Island RNLI lifebout, gardaí and other emergency services also arrived on the scene quickly.

The woman's body was recovered from the water at approximately 3pm by the Aran Island RNLI boat, and remains at the scene.

In a statement, a garda spokesperson confirmed that "gardaí and emergency services conducted an operation following reports of an incident at the Cliffs Moher, this afternoon, Saturday, May 4, 2024".

"The body of a woman, aged in her early 20s, was removed from the water by emergency services."

"Her body remains at the scene," the statement concluded.

It's expected her remains will be transported by hearse to University Hospital Limerick for postmortem.
