Public toilets on West Clare beaches to remain open on winter weekends

PUBLIC toilets on two popular West Clare beaches are to remain open on weekends during the winter.

The move comes in response to a motion brought by Councillor Joe Killeen before the November meeting of the West Clare Municipal District (MD) on Tuesday.

The councillor's motion called on Clare County Council to "investigate the possibility of keeping the toilet facilities open in Spanish Point and Fanore at designated times during the winter months".

In their reply, senior executive officer John O’Malley and executive engineer Paudie Barry of West Clare MD stated that the area office in Ennistymon has committed to "keeping the toilet facilities at Spanish Point and Fanore Beaches open at weekends during the winter months, with resources directed from the existing teams for this". 

"We will also commit to extending the opening hours at both locations for the Christmas period," their statement continued.

Cllr Killeen and Cllr Liam Grant both welcomed the move, with Cllr Killeen highlighting the work that had been put into developing both Spanish Point and Fanore as tourist destinations, and noting the amount of people still using the beaches despite it being off season.

Clr Grant said he was delighted with the response to the motion, asked for clarification around what opening times for the toilet facilities would be on the winter weekends.
