ROAD accidents occurring in housing estates throughout Clare have prompted one local councillor to question current safety measures.

Cllr John Crowe raised the question of current traffic calming measures implemented in housing estates across the county to see how such incidents could be avoided.

At the latest Clare County Council meeting, measures such as reducing speed limits to 30km/h in 2024 have been discussed.

In response to Cllr Crowe, senior engineer of the council Cyril Feeney said that it is “imperative that we remain vigilant” and “re-emphasise the importance” of identifying potential residential traffic calming works where possible.

“Clare County Council is proactive in the prevention of traffic accidents in estates through a number of different measures, namely: we ensure that all new developments meet technical standards, and we have developed low-cost safety schemes,” Mr Feeney said.

As well as this, Mr Feeney mentioned that the government has announced a major review in 2024 which will aim to reduce the speed limit to 30km/h in urban centres and residential estates.

“Our Active Travel schemes also aim to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users, all serious accidents are reviewed with An Garda Siochana and motions brought by council members are reviewed and acted upon accordingly.”
