AN GARDA Síochána is currently investigating a ‘vishing’ fraud incident, which saw a sum of money stolen from Clare person's bank account.
'Vishing' is defined as a fraudulent practice of making phone calls or leaving voice messages posing as a reputable company, in order to gather personal information, such as bank details and credit card numbers.
The female victim in Clare reported to gardaí that she received a call from someone who said they were ringing from a financial institution.
The caller asked the victim to delete her banking app from her phone and to confirm her private details. Unfortunately, money was subsequently transferred from the account.
The injured party acted quickly, notifying the financial institution and reported the matter to gardaí, which is what is advised.
If you or somebody you know has fallen victim to 'vishing', please contact the garda confidential line at 1800 666 111.
