Iconic Kilrush pub and restaurant to close after over 100 years in business

AN ICONIC Kilrush pub and restaurant will close its doors for the last time in the new year.

Crotty's Pub, Restaurant and Accommodation in Kilrush town have announced that they will cease trading on January 4, 2024.

Martin F. McMahon, the current owner of Crotty’s Pub, posted the news on Facebook before Christmas.

"It's with profound sadness and regret to all our loyal and trusted customers and friends that we have made the hard decision to cease trading," the post said.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and kindness during my 6 and half years here," Martin continued in the post.

He also included a special thank you to his "loyal and dedicated staff members".

"Thanks for the memories folks, God bless and good health to you all."

Many people have shared their sadness at the news, and their memories of the pub, in the comments below the post and on social media.

Mary Immaculate College lecturer and historian Dr Paul O'Brien shared his fond memories of working in Crotty's, and of a famous visitor to the pub many years ago.

"I'm saddened to learn that Crotty’s Bar, Kilrush is to close after 114 years," Dr O'Brien posted on X(formerly Twitter).

"I worked there for a good few years. It was home to the very famous concertina player, Elizabeth Crotty."

"Many famous people stopped there over the years, inc. John B. Keane (pictured)," he continued.

Crotty’s Pub will close for good on January 4 early in the New Year.
