New pedestrian crossing will improve accessibility at West Clare beach

A PEDESTRIAN crossing to be installed at a West Clare beach will improve accessibility while also controlling parking through the addition of double yellow lines.

The controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed on the R482 in the townland of Leagard South in Spanish Point, near the Armada Hotel. The existing concrete footpath will also be widened, and double yellow lines will be added to address the issue of parking on the road.

Councillors were briefed on the planned installation at a meeting of the West Clare Municipal District.

Senior Executive Engineer for the district Enda MacNamara explained: “The vast majority of pedestrians come from that side of Spanish Point to cross over at the Armada [Hotel] to head to the beach, it is the desired line for pedestrians.

“There is no controlled crossing at the school, in my time the school has never approached us for a controlled crossing, you’re close to a junction there which is not ideal, the location we’ve proposed has adequate sight-lines so I guess our view is that it ticks a lot of boxes”.

The planned installation was welcomed by councillors at the meeting.
