Gardai to shine a light on Female Genital Mutilation in Ireland at Shannon Airport event

Awareness initiative is taking place ahead of busy weekend
A multi-agency initiative to raise awareness about Female Genital Mutilation in Ireland is taking place at Shannon Airport this Friday.
An Garda Síochána, in collaboration with AkiDwa, are hosting Operation Limelight ahead of what is expected to be a busy weekend at the airport as the Easter holidays come to an end.
"This multi-agency initiative, organised by the National Child Protection Unit at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau, aims to raise awareness about Female Genital Mutilation in Ireland. The event will highlight the legal implications and the significant health risks faced by women and girls subjected to this practice," said a garda spokesperson.
Participating agencies, who each have a presence in Shannon this Friday, include An Garda Síochána and AkiDwa, who provide accompaniment services. The operation is further supported by the Department of Justice and Tusla.
Garda members from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau and the Clare/Tipperary garda division will be actively involved and will be engaging with members of the public as well as airport and airline staff.
