Gardaí in Clare warn of 'bogus callers' scam

GARDAÍ in Clare have issued a warning over 'bogus callers' going door to door across the county.

In a statement, An Garda Síochana warned of door to door traders/repair men, who "carry out very little work and charge extortionate fees for services."

"This is criminal behavior, which range from criminal damage, deception, to demanding money with menaces," they said.

"The culprits usually call to homes of vulnerable people, maybe elderly or living alone, on the pretext of being professional roofers, painters, driveway maintenance etc and they convince the victim that repairs or works need to be carried out at their home."

If you suspect someone is a bogus caller there are a number of steps you can take such as telling the caller you don’t employ “cold callers” at your door. Ask for documentation and always seek comparable estimates.

If they insist on paying cash only do not engage with them, and never leave strangers unsupervised in your home.

If you suspect bogus callers or trades people in your area do not hesitate to contact your local Garda station, any Garda station or the Confidential Line: 1800 666 111.
