Calls for assessment of speed limits on N67 due to 'frightening' speeds by drivers

CALLS have been made for an assessment of the speed limits on the N67 as it enters Kilkee.

Councillor Cillian Murphy submitted a motion at the January meeting of the West Clare Municipal district asking that "an assessment of the speed limit be undertaken on the N67 at the Miltown Rd entry to Kilkee", due to the "frightening" speeds that some drivers enter the residential area at that side of the town.

"This has been highlighted to me over the last four and a half years but particularly in the last few months. Traffic driving into the town from the entry point is just insane.

There's a speed limit of 60kmph coming into Kilkee and they're comfortably doing 100kmph coming down the hill," Cllr Murphy stated at the first district meeting of the year which took place on January 16.

He also requested that a driver feedback sign be installed at the entry point, similar to the one on the Kilrush road.

In response to the motion, Anne O’Sullivan, senior executive engineer for roads and transportation, said that Cllr Murphy's request for "an assessment of the speed limit on the N67 at the Miltown Rd entry to Kilkee will be considered as part of the next speed limit review".

"If it is considered that the speed limits at this location are not set in accordance with the relevant guidance at the time of adoption a member of the public can submit a formal request for Speed Limit Appeal at this location."

Her reply also stated that "the provision of driver feedback signage at this location will be reviewed by the Road Design Office and will be raised with TII."
