'Don’t be embarrassed if you have been scammed': Clare gardaí encourage fruad victims to report crimes

Advice comes as gardaí in Killaloe investigate reports of fraud
An Garda Síochana in Clare are calling on the public to not "be embarrassed if you have been scammed", and to report such crimes.
Gardaí in Killaloe are investigating a report of fraud that they received from a member of the public in recent weeks.
According to a statment released by gardaí, the injured party in this case clicked on a link ‘My Tax Back’ and they then received an email directing them to enter their bank details.
A quantity of money was taken from their account in what is known as Account Takeover Fraud.
"Don’t assume anyone who has sent you an email, text message or has called your phone is who they say they are," Clare crime prevention officer Catriona Holohan said.
"Never ever give banking details or personal details to someone you don’t know or trust," she continued.
"Genuine organisations like banks and the Revenue Commissioners will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, password or bank details.
Always log onto a website directly rather than clicking on links in an email, monitor your bank account regularly, and don’t return calls to international numbers that you don’t recognise."
If you receive a notification of a change of bank account details from a supplier, always verify this change directly using an established contact, she said.
"Don’t be embarrassed if you have been scammed. Report it to your local Garda Station."
