The authorities were contacted on Sunday afternoon by an individual who expressed concern about the manner in which the car - a blue Volkswagen saloon model - was being driven.
The vehicle was travelling between Ballina and Birdhill at the time and gardai from Killaloe were deployed to look for the car after the report was received.
After it was subsequently located, gardaí were quickly able to establish, using their mobility app, that the driver was not insured to drive the Volkswagen.
The vehicle was seized under the Road Traffic Act and gardai say they have initiated criminal proceedings against the driver who is now due before the courts.
Anyone convicted of driving without insurance faces a driving ban and a possible prison sentence.
In highlighting the incident and subsequent detection on social media, gardai did not disclose exactly where the vehicle was located.
They have also not publicly disclosed if the driver of the car was male or female.
