Clare gardaí warn of 'half-price-guy' scam targeting Irish householders

Con advertising money off bills scheme is 'too good to be true'
An Garda Síochana are warning residents in Clare to beware of a "half-price-guy" scam targeting householders up and down the country.
The scammer advertises that they can get you anything for half price, offering vouchers, oil, or to pay your bills.
They will ask a person to pay them half the cost and they clear it on their behalf.
According to gardaí, they are currently advertising on Snapchat and gardaí also believe that they are using stolen card details to fill "orders".
Although the initial payment goes through to the company, they suffer the loss when the card or details are reported stolen, with the cost then reverting back on the customer.
A spokesperson for the Clare Crime Prevention Office said that while it seems complicated "it shows the lengths that fraudsters will go to and we are just trying to raise awareness about the different ways that they are operating."
"If it sounds too good to be true it is too good to be true," they said.
