IN RESPONSE to a local Clare councillor's concern regarding "chronic traffic congestion", a council engineer says traffic should now be improved because various projects have "finished".

At the latest Ennis Municipal District (EMD) meeting, Clare councillor Pat Daly questioned what was being done to improve traffic congestion in the town and asked EMD to coordinate with gardaí to improve it.

Paddy Tiernan, senior executive engineer, responded by saying that a number of projects involving road infrastructure in the town was the likely cause of obstruction. Because most of these are now complete, Mr Tiernan has said that the traffic will likely ease.

"Over the past few months, various infrastructure projects have been undertaken within Ennis. These include resurfacing projects on Clon Road, Quin Road, Tulla Road and the R458 in Clarecastle.

"Uisce Éireann have also undertaken various water main replacement projects including on the Clon Road from the Quin Road Roundabout to Captain Macs. The commencement of the public realm project has also resulted in a road closure of Upper O’Connell Street from the junction of Old Barrack street to the junction Carmody street."

While the senior engineer recognised that these projects have "contributed to a degree of traffic congestion within the town" over the past few months, he says that there should now be less traffic than before.

"With the majority of these projects now complete we expect to see an increased improvement in traffic conditions within the town," Mr Tiernan concluded.
