An assessment will be carried out on the Ballybeg neighbourhood in Ennis in the coming weeks

An assessment for traffic calming measures will be carried out on an Ennis cul-de-sac in the coming weeks.

Ennis Municipal District will carry out an assessment of the L-8364, near Ballybeg water tower in the coming weeks, "with a view to installing some traffic calming measures if deemed necessary".

That's according to Paddy Tiernan, A/Senior Executive Engineer for Ennis MD, who was responding to a motion submitted by Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy at the MD's April meeting on Tuesday morning, April 2.

Cllr Colleran Molloy's motion called for "traffic calming measures and signage be installed on the first road down from the Ballybeg Water tower due to the complaints of speeding in the neighbourhood."

Mr Tiernan noted in his reply that "the most likely form of these measures would be increased signage and line marking", but also noted that there was currently no funding available for this project.

A number of Cllr Colleran Molloy's colleagues voiced their support for the motion when it was put to the MD.

Cllr Paul Murphy also voiced his support, and suggested getting local children living on the cul-de-sac, which services approximately 20 residential properties, involved in erecting home-made signage, to indicate to drivers that this was an area where children were likely to be present and playing.

Mr Tiernan welcomed Cllr Murphy's suggestion, saying this was something the MD would be willing to explore and even suggesting that the MD arrange to print any signs produced by the children.

Cllr Colleran Molloy also welcomed the suggestion from her colleague, and thanked Mr Tiernan and the MD for their reply.
