IMPROVED safety measures for a road junction in a busy Clare spot has been the subject of concern in one council meeting.

Councillor Paul Murphy highlighted the need for improved road design at the junction of Barrack Street, Old Road and Church Drive/Creggaunahilla at the latest Ennis Municipal District (MD) meeting.

At a previous meeting, Cllr Murphy said: “This is a dangerous junction where three roads meet and there is the added complication of a carpark being adjacent to it also, a number of pedestrians have been knocked down and this needs to be given priority urgently,” he said.

In the latest meeting, Cllr Murphy argued that properly marked parking along Old Road “would act as a speed deterrent” as well as provide “much needed” village centre parking.

Senior executive engineer Paddy Tiernan responded by saying the realignment of roads, extra parking space and improved footpaths are in the works.

“Ennis MD are currently working on a revised layout for the area. The revised layout will involve realignment of the existing roads, additional parking and upgraded footpaths and pedestrian routes,” Mr Tiernan said.

However, he also referred to the fact that funding has been difficult to secure thus far: “To date, efforts to secure funding for this project have proved unsuccessful.

“Ennis MD will continue to try to establish a funding source for this project.”
