Calls for developers to take responsibility for traffic calming measures in new housing developments

A MOTION was brought before the October meeting of Clare County Council calling for traffic calming measures to be made a planning condition to all new applications for housing developments.
The motion was brought by Shannon councillor John Crowe, as he has received a number of complaints from constituents over cars speeding through housing estates.
"There isn't a councillor in this chamber, or in any chamber around the country, that hasn't been asked about traffic calming measures," he said. "It's a major, major problem."
Three estates in Cllr Crowe's village Sixmilebridge have approached him over their need for traffic calming measures, he told the council meeting, calling the issue a "disaster".
He feels that the issue of traffic calming should be factored into the planning application stage of housing developments, rather than be left to councils to solve afterwards.
"This is not just for Clare, this is all over the country. This motion should be sent to every council, and maybe something can be done nationally as regards insisting that developers install traffic calming measures," Cllr Crowe added.
