Substantial increase in holidaymakers flying from Shannon and other regional airports

Shannon Airport departures have increased by 57% year-on-year
Irish holidaymakers are increasingly opting to fly from regional airports like Shannon and Cork, recent figures reveal.
Shannon Airport departures have increased by 57% year-on-year, while departures from Cork Airport have increased by 31% year-on-year.
The main reasons for holidaymakers deciding to depart from regional airports include more routes from regional airports than ever before – meaning an increased choice of destinations, a higher capacity from regional airports has seen prices equalize so people no longer pay more to fly from their local airport, and the convenience of flying from a local airport
With Shannon Airport, sun holiday passengers increased by a staggering 67%, with Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the Algarve all proving to be popular destinations.
Flying to the US from Shannon remains popular, with New York, Boston and Las Vegas making the list as the top US routes from Shannon.
Cork Airport also has seen a 35% increase in sun holidays and a 26% increase in city breaks. Lanzarote, the Algarve and Costa del Sol are the top sun destinations from Cork Airport, while Amsterdam, Valencia and London are among the top city breaks from Cork.
An increase in airline capacity, a wide choice of routes and competitive airline prices were cited as the main reasons for growth in both Shannon and Cork Airport, according to the figures from travel agency Click&Go Holidays.
