A woman in her 60s, who is understood to have lain dead in a house in Cork for at least a year, has been named locally.

The body of Joyce O'Mahony was found on Tuesday afternoon after pest control services were called to a property nearby.

The pest control services went to the semi-detached house, located at Brookfield Lawn in the Lough area of Cork city, after they suspected the two-storey house was the source of the vermin problem.

The pest control firm contacted the gardaí after the remains were found in the property. An investigation was launched after the area was sealed off.

It is understood that Ms O’Mahony was an extremely private person, who had not been seen locally for several years.

Joyce O'Mahony was predeceased by her father Dr Thomas J O’Mahony who had a successful GP surgery in the Lough prior to his death in 2010, and by her mother Patricia, who was known locally as a stylish and musical person.
