Rain and wind swept the country as Storm Gerrit took trees with it

A TAXI driver in Waterford city was hospitalised for injuries after a tree fell on their car during stormy weather.

The stormy weather which Storm Gerrit brought with it saw a tree fall in the Newtown area of Waterford city, on the Dunmore road, late last night.

Fire service confirmed that three units attended the scene from approximately 11pm to 12:17am. Emergency services also attended the scene.

The driver's injuries were reportedly minor, and that they were the sole-occupant of the car.

Storm Gerrit brought a blanketed yellow weather warning across the country. Many south and west counties were under status orange alerts, with dangerous travelling conditions and coastal flooding reported.

Strong rain and gales hit the country, with more than 10 trees down in Waterford according to a spokesperson from Waterford County Council.

"We had reports of ten trees down and one tree fell on a travelling taxi. The driver was removed to hospital," said senior engineer for roads with Waterford County Council, Gabriel Hynes.

"The injuries were not serious but it was certainly a serious incident at the same time. There were no properties damaged, but there was some damage to cars as they tried to drive through the flooded roads," Mr Hynes concluded.
