Security guards commence operation on Dublin Bus services due to anti-social behaviour

Dublin Bus said that the creation of mobile security units is in response to the rising incidents of anti-social behaviour on buses.

As of Monday 7 October, security guards will be operating on board Dublin Bus services.

Dublin Bus said that these measures are in response to the rising incidents of anti-social behaviour on buses. Last year the numbers of reports of anti-social behaviour had risen to over 1,000 - double the amount from 5 years previous in 2019.

This move by Dublin Bus is an attempt to make passengers and staff feel safer onboard their services following advice from independent security experts.

As part of the 20-week pilot programme, mobile teams of security guards will travel on buses during afternoon, evening and night services.

Two of these mobile units will operate on the north and southside of the city between 2pm and 2am Sunday to Thursday, and between 4pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday.

According to Dublin Bus, these mobile security units will help complement the existing safety measures on buses, such as CCTV.

Dublin Bus intends on implementing this pilot programme on a permanent basis with this phase being closely monitored to evaluate its impact on customers, staff and overall incident numbers and response times.

Speaking on Morning Ireland on Monday, CEO of Dublin Bus Billy Hann said: "The team will provide a visible and reassuring presence for both our customers and employees, actively enhancing safety and security across our network."

The move has been welcomed by SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU), however the groups believe that it does not override the need for a dedicated garda public transport unit.

General Secretary of the NBRU Dermot O'Leary said that the creation of the mobile security units is a positive step, however it would not eradicate anti-social behaviour on buses as security guards will not have the powers of detention or arrest.
