The text claiming to be from gov.ie had circulated previously in October offering a 'discounted electricity bill'

A text scam is currently making the rounds to mobile phone users across Ireland claiming to be from gov.ie and stating that receivers of the text are eligible for a "discounted electricity bill" under the emergency benefit scheme followed by a link.

The same text scam made the rounds in October of this year following the Budget announcement.

A warning regarding these scams on the gov.ie website states: "Scams and attempted fraud are very common. They can happen at any time. Government departments and agencies or your bank will never phone, text, email or video call you unexpectedly asking for your bank details.

"Never give your bank details, passwords or personal details if it seems a bit odd or out of the blue."

The public are also urged to not engage with anyone who contacts you saying that they have your PPS number.

If you believe you are a victim of a cyber-crime, contact your local Garda station and take screenshots of texts, emails or other communications.

Some of the most common types of scams involve the use of fake emails, calls or texts pretending to be from real companies.
