A man has appeared in court charged with brandishing a knife in Dublin city centre.

Oisin Peavoy, 38, with an address in Granby Row, Dublin 1, appeared at Dublin Metropolitan District Court on Wednesday.

He was charged with two counts of producing a knife and two counts of threatening and abusive behaviour over incidents at Gardiner Street Upper and Parnell Square West on Tuesday morning.

Detective Garda Paul Griffin told the court that Peavoy was arrested at 9.56pm and charged at 10.58pm.

Det Gda Griffin said the accused made replies to each of the charges under caution.

The detective said Peavoy objected to three of the charges and said only one was “somewhat lawful”.

Peavoy, who denied that was his name, said he did not want to be represented by a solicitor who had been asked to appear by his family, who were present in court.

He said he wanted to represent himself and added: “What has occurred to me is unlawful.”

Peavoy said: “I am a soldier in the king’s army.”

He made reference to the legal authority of the European Union and told the court: “I require the Hague’s presence here.”

There were two incidents in the Gardiner Street and Parnell Square area at 8.42am and 9.17am on Tuesday.

Asked by Judge Gerard Jones for background to the case, Det Gda Griffin said Peavoy had “brandished” a knife, which was shown in court.

Det Gda Griffin said gardai would have objections to bail being granted but there was no such application.

Judge Jones directed that Peavoy receive medical assistance.

He was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison for a week until June 5.
