THE GARDA Dog Unit has bid a fond farewell to a long-serving member who has "hung up his harness".

Laser, who has served as a detection dog for ten years in Cork, has retired from service to live with his handler and "best friend", Garda Pat Harrington.

Joining the Garda Dog Unit as a mere pup of 5 months old, Laser was trained by Garda Harrington as a general purpose dog, and was deployed on detections after 18 months.placeholder image

Some of the major successes he has sniffed out over his decade-long career include a €900,000 grow house, along with locating several burglars and recovering plenty of stolen goods.

Laser’s reward after each day's hard work was "time to play with his favourite ball, some Rodeo dog treats and a Dentastix", according to a statement by gardaí on social media on October 18.

"After a decade long career serving the people of Ireland, Laser hangs up his Garda harness this week and will retire in bliss at home," the statement read.

"There will be lots more much deserved lie-in’s and playtime as he enjoys his 80’s after a long and distinguished police career. Thank you for your service, Laser."

Many replied to the post on X(formerly known as Twitter), congratulating Laser and wishing him a happy retirement.
