The charity is 'inundated' with requests from pounds

A dog charity in Limerick has called for help for dogs who "never know kindness" and are bred for hunting.

Deel Animal Rescue, based in Newcastle West, has asked for help after being "inundated" with requests from pounds to help with Lurchers, a breed of dog which results from mating a greyhound with a dog of another type.

According to Deel Animal Rescue, pounds are now at full capacity and the Lurchers are left in a "very dangerous position".

"We are inundated with requests from pounds to help with Lurchers. The pounds are full to capacity and so these poor souls are in a very dangerous position. They legally have 5 days to be reclaimed or go to a rescue. Make no mistake, no one is coming for these dogs. If a rescue doesn’t step in, then their days are numbered," said Deel Animal Rescue on their fundraiser page.

"This is not the fault of the pounds or their staff. This is the fault of those who let their dogs roam, unneutered to have litter upon litter. To those indiscriminately breeding Lurchers for hunting and discarding them if they are no good. These dogs never know kindness, a bed or a regular food source. They almost always come to our rescue with mange, damaged limbs, full of parasites, terrified and broken," they explained.

Deel Animal Rescue takes care of Lurchers from across Ireland. You can donate to their fundraiser here, and sponsor a dog.
