A THRILLING two-day cycling challenge has brought together retailers from all corners of the country, and successfully raised thousands for the Irish Grocers Benevolent Fund (IGBF).

With a remarkable total of €53,000 raised over the short period, the event, organised by RAYCSPORTS, in association with the IGBF, aimed to raise awareness and funds for the IGBF's mission of providing financial relief for persons in need who have been involved in these trade sectors.

Cycling enthusiasts gathered to embark on an arduous journey, cycling over 150 kilometres each day, from Athlone to Kilkenny and back, for two consecutive days.

RAYCSPORTS, the organisation responsible for route planning and logistics, brought its expertise and passion to the event. Led by experienced husband-and-wife duo, cyclist Ray Clarke, and Tina Clarke, the event's master organiser, the team meticulously designed scenic routes, incorporating the breathtaking beauty of Ireland's landscapes.

Barilla, the main sponsor, provided substantial financial support, recognising the tireless work undertaken by retailers and expressing their appreciation to the Irish retail community.

Looking toward the future, the IGBF is already gearing up for next year's challenge, with exciting plans underway. While whispers suggest the exclusion of the Wolf Trap (Slieve Bloom Mountains) climb, the introduction of a more popular ascent awaits eager cyclists.

Registration for 2024's event is due in September, and looks to take place in June of next year.

Tina Clarke, a co-founder of RAYCSPORTS said: "Thank you to every cyclist, to every employer for allowing them the days off to join us, to the retailers that fed and watered us, to the hotels that allowed us in with bikes and cycling shoes in tow, to the driving force behind the project Mr Kevin Keating (President of Appeals 2022), and to those that were left behind at home listening to strava talk and power output conversations. You all played a vital role."

The IGBF also expressed heartfelt thanks to Mr Keating, along with every cyclist, employer, retailer, and hotel who accommodated the event.

As the old adage goes: "In real life, you're always stronger with a little bit of support," reflecting the essence of their mission.
