The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s literary phenomenon is set to have you tearing up

Whether you’re a hardcore fan of the million-selling novel, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s literary phenomenon is one of the year’s most powerful movies.

With plot, cast, trailer, age rating, release date and more, here’s our complete guide to the It Ends With Us film.

Chances are, if you read It Ends With Us back in 2016, you were going through a box of tissues per chapter. Texas-born author Colleen Hoover’s million-selling romance novel was bruised, beautiful, raw and inspiring.

Now, just when you thought your tear ducts had finally run dry, Justin Baldoni’s movie adaptation of It Ends With Us arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, August 9 and you will weep your own body weight.

“It’s really hard to take a book that’s so beloved and also very important for a lot of social reasons and turn it into a film,” director Justin Baldoni (who also co-stars as Ryle) told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m grateful that people see the love and care and the attention that has gone into it, and that we really honoured the book, I believe.”

Drawing on childhood memories of the domestic abuse she witnessed in own parents’ marriage, it’s no wonder Colleen Hoover described It Ends With Us as “the hardest book I’ve ever written”.

It was no picnic to read, either, with millions of readers following every heartbeat of the intoxicating (but ultimately toxic) relationship between aptly named florist Lily Bloom and abusive neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid.

When she opens a flower shop in downtown Boston, Lily (Blake Lively) hopes she can start afresh after her father’s recent funeral and the revelation that he abused her mother. She still wonders what happened to her old college friend and one-that-got-away, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar). But suddenly a smouldering stranger is smelling the roses and Lily finds herself swept off her feet by Ryle.

Their early courtship is electrifying, a whirlwind of candlelit restaurants, karaoke bars, cab rides and urgent kisses. But one terrible day, a crack appears in Ryle’s façade – and the darkness floods through. As Lily’s voiceover tells us in the It Ends With Us trailer: “Fifteen seconds is all it takes to completely change everything…”

You can catch It Ends With US in cinemas on Friday, August 9.
